Buy or rent a wedding dress?

We compare costs, fitting options and what you’re left with after the wedding.

A bride in a fitted, shimmering gown with a thigh-high slit browses the dresses hanging on rails in the Mija Loraa salon

Almost every bride who sits down with us on the sofa at ul. Lipowa 18 asks this question sooner or later. Some know from day one that they want a dress of their own for ever. Others are watching every złoty, or are getting married in a few months and can’t wait for a dress to be made. There is no single right answer — only the one that fits your budget, your date and what you want to do with the dress afterwards. Below we compare the two routes step by step, just as we would at your visit.

Buy or rent a wedding dress? The quick comparison

Start with the table. If you find yourself leaning towards one column in most rows, you already have your first answer.

What matters Buying Renting
Cost Higher — the dress is yours to keep Lower — you only pay to use it
Choice The latest designer collections, any size to order Proven styles from previous seasons, in the sizes we have in the salon
Fit Full, including made to measure Minor alterations in our studio
Timing Ideally ordered 6–8 months before the wedding A few weeks can be enough, if the dress is free on your date
Afterwards A keepsake, a photo shoot or resale Return it — no cleaning or storage

Treat this as the typical picture rather than hard rules. Sometimes a collection dress is priced close to a rental, and sometimes a rented dress needs more work in the studio than usual.

When buying a wedding dress makes more sense

Buying is the natural choice when you have fallen for a particular new style. The latest collections arrive in the salon as sample dresses for trying on, and the dress you will wear is ordered to your measurements. You get a dress cut for your figure, not for the bride who wore it before you.

Buy your dress if:

  • your measurements are less usual — a very petite or tall frame, a fuller bust or wider hips — and you want the cut to fit from the start;
  • you dream of changes that can’t be undone: a shorter train, added sleeves, a different neckline, extra lace;
  • you’re planning a post-wedding photo shoot whenever suits you, with no rush to hand the dress back;
  • you want to keep the dress as a memento, or sell it later and recover part of the cost.

Just keep an eye on the calendar. A made-to-order dress usually takes several months, and fittings and alterations come after that. That’s why it’s easiest to start looking 9–12 months before the wedding and to order around 6–8 months before. We’ve set out the whole timeline in our article on when to buy a wedding dress.

When renting a wedding dress is the smart choice

Renting suits brides who want to look wonderful for one day without paying for a dress that will then hang in a wardrobe for years. It’s also a lifesaver when the wedding is only a few months away and it’s too late to have a new dress made.

Renting works well when:

  • the budget matters — the money you save can go on shoes, a veil, the photographer or the honeymoon;
  • the date is close — a rental dress is already in the salon, with no waiting for an order;
  • you wear a standard size, or the difference can be evened out with minor alterations;
  • you’d rather have nothing to deal with afterwards — you return the dress, with no cleaning, storing or selling;
  • you need a second look — for the day-after party (the Polish poprawiny), a photo shoot or a civil ceremony when you already have a church dress.

Our wedding dress rental in Białystok offers dresses in many styles, silhouettes and sizes — classic, boho and modern. Every dress is checked, cleaned and prepared in our studio before it goes out.

What sets the price of a wedding dress rental?

The price of a rental depends on the dress, how recent it is and how long you keep it — dresses from recent collections or with heavy embellishment can cost more. Renting usually costs noticeably less than buying a new dress, because you pay to wear it, not to own it. We look at what drives the price of the dress itself in What determines the price of a wedding dress?

When you do the maths, compare the whole amount, not just the price tag:

  • when buying, add the alterations and, after the wedding, any cleaning and storage — or subtract what you get back from selling it;
  • when renting, ask what the price covers: usually preparing the dress, minor fitting and cleaning after its return. A deposit is often paid when you reserve, and a refundable security deposit may be taken when you collect the dress.

You’ll get the exact figures and terms at your visit. Tell your stylist how much you’d like to spend, and she’ll show you dresses within it, from the collection and from the rental rail alike.

Fitting a rented dress in our tailoring studio

A rented dress doesn’t have to “almost fit”. Our tailoring studio, right behind the salon, makes minor alterations so the dress sits well on your figure. Most often that means:

  • taking in the waist or back along the seams;
  • shortening or adjusting the straps;
  • pinning up the hem or the train so you can walk comfortably;
  • adjusting the bodice so it holds you without pinching.

In a rental dress, alterations are usually reversible — after your wedding the dress goes on to the next bride. So permanent shortening, a new neckline or reworking the cut are generally off the table. If those are the changes you have in mind, that’s a strong argument for buying. We explain how studio fittings work and how long they take in our article on wedding dress alterations.

Bring the shoes and the underwear you’ll wear on the day to your studio fitting. The heel height decides the length of the dress, and the bra decides how the bodice sits.

How renting works at Mija Loraa

Renting with us takes four steps:

  1. Try on and choose. Book a fitting and try on rental dresses with your stylist. The visit is free and lasts about 90 minutes. You’ll be the only bride in the salon, so you can compare silhouettes at your own pace.
  2. Reserve it for your date. We hold the dress for your wedding — for 1 day, a few days or a week, if you’re also planning a photo shoot or a day-after party.
  3. Fitting. Our studio makes minor alterations so the dress fits perfectly.
  4. Collection and return. Collect the dress just before the wedding and simply bring it back afterwards.

In wedding season, roughly May to September, the most popular dresses and Saturdays are booked earlier. It’s usually worth choosing a rental dress 2–4 months before the wedding, and at the latest a few weeks before, so there’s time for alterations.

What happens to the dress after the wedding

It’s worth asking yourself this straight away, because it often settles the question.

A dress you buy stays with you. You can wear it for a photo shoot a few weeks after the wedding, have it professionally cleaned and keep it as a memento, or sell it. Pre-loved wedding dresses usually sell for a fraction of the original price — often half or less, depending on the style and condition. If you plan to sell from the start, choose a timeless silhouette and look after the dress on the day.

A rented dress simply comes back to the salon. You don’t need to clean it or find room for it in your wardrobe. If you want outdoor photos, plan the shoot within the rental period — which is why the one-week option is so popular.

Still undecided? Bring the question to a fitting in the salon. We’ll show you both routes on real dresses, in your size and budget, and you can decide calmly, with no pressure.
